Gondwana sedimentary basins of eastern India were intruded by several flows and dykes perhaps related to Mesozoic volcanic activities. These igneous bodies are broadly considered to be related either to the Deccan Traps or the Rajmahal volcanics because of their proximity to these two major volcanic provinces. The present study focuses on petrology, geochemistry and geochronology of such igneous rocks from the Singrauli Gondwana coal field.

The aim of the project is to carry out a detailed field, petrographic, mineral chemistry, geochemical, isotopic (Sr and Nd) and geochronological study on various lamproites, lamprophyres and mafic-ultramafic dykes of Bastar Craton and to constrain the nature as well as evolution of their mantle source region. As lamproite and lamprophyre not only originate from different depth in the mantle but also from different enrichment processes in varying tectonic setting so their mutual comparison can shed light on any vertical/horizontal mantle heterogeneity, if any.
