Welcome to the Institute of Science at Banaras Hindu University.
The Institute of Science (BHU) is one of the most respected destinations for science teaching and research in the country. With its 320-plus highly accomplished faculty members, it offers some of the most sought-after B.Sc. and M.Sc. degree programs in its 13 departments of Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Mathematical Sciences.
A DBT-supported Interdisciplinary School of Life Sciences (ISLS), Centre for Genetic Disorders (CGD) and a DST-supported Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences (CIMS) provide opportunities for interdisciplinary cross-talk. The Institute maintains a high standard of research with the generous support of SAP programs from UGC and FIST, PURSE and SATHI programs from DST, for strengthening research infrastructure in its departments and through a large number of individual research grants to its faculty members from almost all the major funding agencies. A large number of our faculty members have visited leading academic institutions abroad and have ongoing international collaborations. Several of them have distinguished themselves by receiving J C Bose National Fellowship and Fellowships of science academies, including the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI), National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS), etc.
The Institute plays a significant role in the activities of the Central Discovery Centre, which offers analytical support with some of the most advanced state-of-the-art instruments and incubation support for promoting entrepreneurship and start-ups on campus. The Institute of Science has played a major role in getting the recognition of “Institution of Eminence” to BHU from the Ministry of Education. The modern classrooms for theory and practical, several student hostels, playgrounds and cultural activities provide a congenial ambience and opportunity for students to develop their all-round personalities to emerge as well-trained resources with knowledge, character, values and ethics ready to contribute to the different domains of science and technology for the resurgence of our country.
